Rob Thomas出生在德国的一个军事基地，青少年时期经常往返于祖母居住的南加州和母亲居住的佛罗里达州。17岁时，他放弃了高中学业与不正常的家庭生活，靠着搭便车在美国东南部一带流浪，而当时他生活中最重要的爱好就是音乐。

Rob Thomas在自己流浪的生涯中，一直带着一盘录音带，里面收录着Al Green、Van Morrison、Elvis Costello、R.E.M等人的歌曲，他用这些音乐来激励自己。在他尚未闯出

一片天地之前，经常用写歌来舒缓压力，还加入了当地几个摇滚乐团，参与各种演唱活动。

他在奥兰多地区定区后，遇到了有相同音乐理念的鼓手Paul Doucette与贝斯手Brian Yale，三人携手后又遇到在迈阿密录音工作的吉他手Adam Gaynor与在亚特兰大音乐学校就读的吉他手Kyle Cook，Matchbox Twenty终于成立了。

他们成团后便与Atlantic唱片公司签约，并在制作人Matt Serletic(曾制作过Collective Soul、Aerosmith的专辑)的掌舵下，于1996年发行第一张专辑《Yourself Or Someone Like You》。这张专辑共推出四支单曲Push、3am、Real World和Back 2 Good，支支都成为电台的最爱，而这四支有趣的音乐录像带也在MTV及VH1电视台获得极高的播放率。

接着Matchbox Twenty在视觉与听觉上的魅力更让他们得到来自四面八方的赞誉：1997年获得滚石杂志读者票选『最佳新进团体』、Billboard杂志1997年『最佳团体奖』、入选Spin杂志1998年年度十大专辑之一、而Rob Thomas的领袖气质让他列入People杂志1998年『50名全球最美丽的人物』之一。

Matchbox Twenty的世界巡回演唱，场场爆满、座无虚席。自从1996年发行首张专辑“Yourself Or Someone Like You”后，Matchbox Twenty花了600多个日子展开巡回演唱，如今他们已脱胎换骨，俨然成为一个卯足全力向前冲的音乐团体。Rob Thomas的歌声，在力量与成熟度上都已开花结果，加上Kyle Cook与Adam Gaynor扣人心弦的合音、与和谐的双吉他编曲，而贝斯手Brian Yale与鼓手Paul Doucette独特有力的节奏，将所有元素都凝聚在一起。

谈到该团不可思议的成就时，Rob Thomas不以为然地说：“这真是非常怪异，我们现在唯一要担心的，就是如何做好一张专辑。” 于是在后来的专辑《Mad Season》中，我们再度见识到Thomas的词曲创作天赋，其中的歌曲都在描写着如何将这个疏离的世界凝聚起来，当下许多艺人的第二张专辑都是描绘名与利为他们带来的孤寂，描写的不是寂寞的公车窗户，就是无止尽的高速公路，但是Thomas笔下的歌词却是一个个有关爱情、失落、生命，以及如何生活的动人小故事。

    纵横乐坛10年，Rob Thomas被公认是现代音乐史上的指标性人物。身为Matchbox 20合唱团的创作人及主唱，同时也担任着灵魂人物的角色。他在1996年-2003年陆续推出《Yourself Or Someone Like You》、《Mad Season》和《More Than You Think You Are》三张专辑，Rob Thomas带领Matchbox 20缔造了8首全美排行榜冠军单曲，全球累积销量超过2500万张，成绩斐然。

Rob Thomas个人魅力更是所向披靡，他曾拿过3座葛莱美奖、13次BMI金奖，蝉连两届Billboard年度最佳创作人。1999年，Rob与Santana合写合唱的单曲《Smooth》，不仅帮助Santana东山再起重返流行歌坛，自己也捧得3项Grammy大奖，向全球乐迷展示了自己独树一帜的创作实力。

Rob Thomas经过五年构思，在2005年推出首张单飞个人专辑《Something To Be》，发行第一周就空降全美专辑榜冠军宝座。

Rob Thomas说：“你的事业所反映的，只是你的一小部份，你写下的大部份东西，还是应该以情绪为基础，如果你卖出了十亿张的专辑，而你唯一能写下的东西，就只是这十亿张销售量的话，你可能是一个很肤浅的人，你的生活中一定还有一些其它的东西值得写下，不仅是‘我很有钱又有名’之类的话。因为天时地利人和，我们才能获得这样的荣耀。我们不会认为自己有多了不起，因为我们永远不会忘记，这一切的一切都是为了音乐。”

之前还没听过罗伯·汤马逊的歌  也还真不错  像Bryan Adams/Eagles/Richard Marx/Back street boys等的歌也很好听
